ENGLISH

The beauty is a woman, like the elegance that drives my hand.

Beauty, an irresistible Muse that has always overwhelmed me.
Its constant presence has taken possession of my imagination, powerfully accompanying my photography along a path that is now lost in the mists of time.

Beauty unexpectedly surprised and captured among yellow-orange suggestions, artificial skies, uncertain transparencies of both plastic and crystal. Beauty harvested where you do not expect it, where haste, carelessness, distraction, misunderstanding, privacy and prohibitions unfairly impose a price to pay.

The austere, plain, clean beauty. The porcelain beauty of the almond-eyed Renaissance Novella Madonna.
Beauty celebrated without a pause or refreshment, amid salty inspirations, distant longings, sharp melancholies. Between barely hinted smiles, full laughter and follies to be bestowed to the drawer of memories for which it was a pleasure to walk barefoot on life.

The brash beauty, the shy beauty, the womanly beauty. Like the elegance that drives my hand.

Isole su isole e giorni cristallini – Islands on islands and crystal clear days

ENGLISH

For a 2024 of islands on islands and crystal-clear days to be drawn with a light-hearted and gentle hand.
A year of date changes, flight swaps and pace shifts.

A year of immense (and deep) blue, there to startle the wandering traveler that knows no boredom and does not yield neither to tiredness nor to sleep.

ENGLISH

Fuerteventura; land of sand, wind and blue at will.
Land of loose decadence, salty thoughts, far away inspirations.

Last enlightened outpost of a mad, evil Europe.
A Europe that represses, von after von, the free choices of the free man looking for himself.

La mia ispirazione più selvaggia e struggente – My wildest and most consuming inspiration

ENGLISH

I’m writing again, in the month of October, for a Muse who forced me to leave a lethargy that I believed impossible.
I’m writing again for her who was the endless source of my wildest and most consuming inspiration.

I sensed her fatal hand on my images of eyes, legs, glasses and misread fairy tales. A déjà vu of distant fantasies, prehistoric memories, mere hinted scents: matcha, chrysanthemums and red miso.
Differences of thought and overseas distances that leave no chance to the poet who chases.

But, despite everything, I kept praising her in a blind and barefoot silence.
A silence deaf to the mermaids of a fate that passes, marks, cuts and beats, without having decency to wait.

ENGLISH

Travelling, whatever the way, is the most significant and sublime experience granted to mere mortals.

Were it to generate doubts, questions or perhaps become a commitment, though a psychological one, you’d better stay at home, be it only to tame the restlessness that will inevitably follow you to the end of the world.

For me the adventure begins the very moment when the desire becomes possible in my thought. The dream gets touchable, the fire lights within the imagination of what will be.
I enjoy every single moment of the planning, like the tailor sewing a suit that suits perfectly his own size.

Excitement and blissfulness can only reach those peaks represented by the departure, the arrival, the first shot when the eye catches and the hand instinctively fires.
And that’s the magic that sweetens the struggle, despair and pain, which inevitably come with travelling off the beaten track.

Crazy transfers, unimaginable hours, ten-hour a day walks burdened with tools of the trade. Change of habits, mishaps, questionable food, extreme temperatures, poor hygienic conditions, fever, sicknesses and kilos given to the wind.

The solo travel then, amplifies those melancholic and nostalgic feelings that, unless perfectly managed and funneled, consume and consign us to a sadness which neither grants discounts nor gives any quarter.

The final user appreciates the artwork, not even imagining the labor involved to make it, the sacrifice that not everyone is willing to accept.

Beauty always sets its price, but when it finally shows up, just as you imagined it… CLICK. Nothing else matters.

Il Tempo Sospeso – Diario di Viaggio in Nord Corea – The time on hold – North Korea Travel Diary

The time on hold – North Korea Travel Diary

It opens in world premiere on October 20th till November 28th at the Stadium of Domitian – Navona Underground in Rome “The time on hold – Travel Diary in North Korea”, an exhibition of the international photographer Umberto Stefanelli within the “Roma Fotografia 2021 Freedom” Photo Festival.

A still mysterious world, the one the artist chooses to tell; a country of ordinary people, apparently ordinary lives, composed faces and barely perceptible feelings that reveal from a glance or a corner of the mouth; artistic visions and realities reported on paper, with a thousand difficulties and even greater prohibitions.

Pictures of everyday life, taken, most of the time, hiding the camera under clothing or from the inside of a passing car, a project in which only the gifted eye and the photographer touch count, a man able to shoot blindfolded, without looking hardly ever in the lens.
In that solo trip, every move had to be communicated well in advance, photographing a concession to be granted under strict surveillance.

A unique and precious testimony, especially today, in which the limitations posed by the pandemic make travel so difficult, and even more so in lands previously inaccessible.

“I chose to tell about people, everyday life. That life which, unfortunately, we speak little or nothing of, or, unfortunately, little or nothing we know of. No criticism, nor even favors of any kind. I have deliberately distanced myself from “politics” and from the more and more temporary diplomatic solutions.” declares Umberto Stefanelli exclusively.

Those exhibited at the Stadium of Domitian are unpublished picture from North Korea, images, which fix on paper what the glossy shots of the regime would not be willing to show.
An unknown country where it all began back in 1945 when Kim Il-sung imposed himself as the main leader of the country after leading the armies against Japan in the communist resistance.

Over 75 years have passed since that time but the Kim dynasty still rules a dictatorship that lays its foundations on the cult of the personality of the President, initiated by the grandfather of the current Supreme Leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Kim Jong-un and comes down to us.

In the faces portrayed, the dignity of those who live in a time out of time. In a crystallized universe where everything survives equal to itself. Where nothing changes, while everything changes; the resigned looks, the nervous expressions, the restrained emotions, the flaunted pride, the forced smiles of those who have a major score to settle with destiny. A score that, at least for the time being, seems impossible to settle.

Grew up artistically in Tokyo and New York, with exhibitions and artistic projects realized all over the world. His works are kept in the Polaroid International Museum USA, at the Brescia National Museum of Photography, the Civic Gallery of Modena, the CIFA – Italian Center of Author Photography, the Lishui Museum of Photography – China, the Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art and other public and private, national and international collections.

Un attimo di distrazione regalato alla vita – A moment of inattention given to life

Un attimo di distrazione regalato alla vita
Umberto Stefanelli Photographer

A moment of inattention given to life
Umberto Stefanelli Photographer
BRESCIANI VISUAL ART – Via dei Bresciani, 20
from May 6th to June 12th 2021

“The world has stopped. A moment of inattention that was almost fatal.
So many good intentions and as many bad uncertainties.
In this dystopian scenario, Photography is a companion that relaxes and elevates the soul”.

“A moment of inattention given to life”, the new photographic exhibition by Umberto Stefanelli, at “Bresciani Visual Art” in Via dei Bresciani 20, will open on May 6th 2021 from 5 to 8 pm.

Forty images taken between Bhutan, Japan, Tibet, Hong Kong, Mongolia, Nepal, Azerbaijan, Panama, Colombia, just to name a few, which are at the same time travel notes, mental meanderings of a time that has gone, dreamlike fantasies where simplicity chases poetry.
In this absence, Umberto Stefanelli’s photographs do not aim to reproduce the journey or to tell about it, but they are the journey itself: they portray the means used by the artist to narrate a time that has appeared suspended to us all, made of uncertainties and new thoughts, an opportunity to redefine personal spaces and find a way out, which allows the mind to cross the narrow spaces where we have been relegated, to imagine together a possibility of redemption and a new beginning.

A visual exploration focused on faces, horizons, the concept of limit; made up of revelations, awakenings, obsessive-compulsive disorders, toys, pages of gastronomic eros.
Victories, defeats, white walls, egos to be curbed, hermeticism, soldiers and photographs and inscriptions. Hazelnut in the eyes, words in the hands.
“Because when a dream – one of those I used to have as a child – suddenly crosses my way again, my Muse eternalizes, in the labyrinth of my memory, that moment of inattention given to life”.

Fine Art Photographer and Storyteller, grew up artistically in Tokyo and New York, with exhibitions and artistic projects realized all over the world. He cooperated with POLAROID, LEVI’S STRAUSS, L’OREAL, NOKIA, EPSON, GREY GROUP, YOUNG & RUBICAM, NIPPON TELEVISION, ZOOM MAGAZINE. Umberto Stefanelli comes back to Rome – at the “Bresciani Visual Art” gallery – to present an original and unusual photographic project, mainly consisting of unpublished shots which represent a dialogue between the photographer and the images user.

The location is among the most exclusive and unique: a delightful and well-kept gallery located in via dei Bresciani, in the Rione Ponte, just few steps away from Piazza Farnese.
Umberto Stefanelli will also be the protagonist with an unprecedented and extraordinary photographic project about North Korea that will be presented in September – at the Stadium of Domitian – during the “Roma Fotografia 2021 Freedom”, the most important Roman Festival dedicated to photographic art, which will involve the most important galleries and public and private spaces of the capital.
